PATTER

Patter:  to repeat a paternoster in a mechanical way

Athletes have been using patter to great effect for years.  They use it to help create focus on simple and singular elements they are trying to improve while refining a skill or technique; a routine in sport.

Recently, when asked what he was thinking about when he won the British Open, Rory McIlroy responded "It was quite simple really, Process and Spot." That is patter.  Simple reminders of the focus created from all the work done to get to that point that helps lead to success.

TEAMs use Patter as well.  One of my favourite examples in sport where the effectiveness of a TEAM can create much more power than the sum of the parts is the Rugby scrum.  Two teams of 8 going head to head, generating as much as 3000 lbs. of force.   It is amazing how at times, with great technique and TEAMwork a much smaller side can hold off and even push back a much larger side.  There is a great deal of work that goes into creating a powerful and effective scrum, but in the heat of the battle, there is something that the TEAM needs to pull it together; patter.

To create the same kind of power in your organization for routine work, we use PATTER™.

With PATTER™ you will achieve measurable, continuous improvements over the long term.

Pilot:

~ Lead, plan, set the course, direct, focus

The crucial first step is to Focus your TEAM on what you want to accomplish.  Routine work exists to serve a purpose.  It is important that the team understands and shares that purpose and also knows what serving that purpose better looks like.  Pilot helps your TEAM do that.

Activate

~ move to action, make plans executable

Moving to action quickly helps move your TEAM beyond debate and into creating an environment of continuous improvement.  Trying is the first step to learning.  Taking action also includes identifying and mitigating risk.  Activate helps your TEAM learn how to succeed.

Train

~ practice, use repetition and feedback to create excellence, everyday is an opportunity to train

Real training occurs when TEAMs practice everyday.  Move beyond the lecture method and turn every event into an opportunity to learn.  Separate practice time is  not a luxury most organizations have.  That means training methods need to be integrated into daily business.  Train to help your TEAM take the routine to the next level.

Trigger

~ encourage, re-enforce, motivate, support, recognize, shape

Leadership creates the will for a TEAM to step up to the challenge of taking your routine to the next level.  Real step changes in performance can be uncomfortable.  This means that leaders need to go beyond simple reward and punish methods.  Trigger engages your TEAM in continuously strengthening the routine.

Establish

~ define the systems, develop tools (checklists, measurement, templates, etc.), set SOP, build the playbook

Creating structure around routine work is what helps a TEAM make it repeatable.  Structure creates a frame of reference in order to understand what is and isn't an improvement.  Building controls and repeatable methods of measurement creates the ability to understand how efforts are changing performance.  Establish your TEAM's methods by systemizing the approach to routine work.

Re-invent

~ review, evaluate, learn, improve, enhance, change, experiment, improvise, accelerate

Continuous learning is created by making both small and large improvements to how a TEAM works.  Continuously reviewing and evaluating performance together and finding new methods strengthens routine, accelerating what it is capable of delivering.

Re-invent how your TEAM works by consistently improving performance through execution improvement and systemic innovation.
